Event production or event management? Is there a difference? As a matter of fact, there is. I myself was struggling with understanding these terms in the past. From the outside, they may look almost the same. After all, people like me end up doing both and loving it. However, there is a difference. So, let’s break it down and see how each plays a unique role in bringing an event to life.

Event production is where creativity meets logistics. And that is probably ‘s why I love this part of events a little bit more. In fact, it’s  the event producers who bring every technical and creative element to life. Whatever your theme and vision is, the production team will take care of bringing it into the real world. From lights, sound and special effects, entertainment, you name it. To simplify, think of event production as the creative force behind the atmosphere and experience of an event. Because of the production team, you as a guest can fully enjoy the magic and feel like you’re part of something unique.

The production experts handle all the components that guests see, hear, and feel. This includes, for example:

  • Audio and Visual Elements: High-quality sound systems, video setups, and dynamic lighting that set the tone and keep audiences engaged.

  • Day-of Coordination: The event manager is the go-to person on the event day, handling any issues that arise, keeping vendors on track, and making sure everything runs on schedule.

Let’s make it really simple: while event production is all about the experience, event management is about the process that brings everything together.  

To put it another way, event managers are the orchestrators, setting up the framework. On the other hand, the producers are the visionaries, turning that framework into an immersive experience. They work hand in hand, and each brings its own skill set to create a seamless, memorable event.

For me, both management and production are extremely fulfilling. The management part entertains my need for analyzing, planning and thinking seventeen steps ahead. At the same time, the production part allows me to let loose and have fun creating the moments to remember.

Which Do You Need?

To sum up, if you’re planning an event, you will most likely need both. After all, production and management are crucial and equally important – especially if you want to create a unique experience without running into logistical chaos. Think of it as building a house: you’ll need the architect (event manager) who plans and coordinates the build, but you also want the designer (event producer) to make it cosy and unique.
